C. Edgar Dobson Great Echo banjo, S/N 255, Circa 1888

C. Edgar Dobson was not as inventive as his brother Henry C. Dobson, but he is the author of a November 6, 1888 patent for a thick but hollow metal banjo rim with a vent next to the head.  These banjos, which he called his “Great Echo” banjos, also featured metal clad dowel sticks. This example has a 10” diameter rim with a neck with a 25-1/2 inch scale adorned with inlays of brass, pewter, copper and silver.
