George C. Dobson “Victor-Gem” 5-string banjo Circa 1880’s

George C. Dobson was a prominent banjo teacher in the 1880's, and it is widely thought that the banjos sold under his name were made by the J. H. Buckbee Company of New York.  The "Gem" model was next to the lowest in the Victor line, but it is still a good banjo for its time.  It is not nearly as well made, however, as the Henry Dobson "Patent Silver Bell" banjo in my collection.
